Creation of a Character
The origin of 'Maq' is buried deep in my past. We all, as kids and even as adults, create a persona in our minds. It's what we want to be, and we send this persona on impossible journies inside of our imaginations. I was no different, and such characters as Nicks came into being. But as time went on, each of the persona's I created began to branch away from the real me, and became their own person. They all had their own names, histories, and so on.
At some point, the internet intruded itself into my life, although I wasn't much for exploration. However, I relised this was a place for me to become a completely new person. Nobody had to know of the real me. So I trudged over to a small online storyboard-like RPG, and joned their ranks. But what to name this new persona? I wen back in my mind, and tripped over something I'd almost forgotten. The name "Maquesta", from the Dragonlance series. Though the character in that series was nothing like this persona, I liked the way the name sounded. However, I didn't want to get into any trouble by simply stealing the name. So I cahnged it to "Maquestan". Yes, big change, but I felt that was enough. So this new persona, Maquestan, or 'Maq' for short, was labeled.
Right at first, Maq and I were the same. We had the same personalities and behavior. However, as time went on, I began to notice a rift growing between us. Many people who know me in real life know I'm very friendly, but I'm also timid. I'm very much the coward. However, the moment a computer is in front of me, I'm all business. In a way, that's what happened to Maq. She became so much more aggressive then I could ever be. She was still friendly, bubbly, and ditzy to a fault, but beneath all that, this persona known as Maq contained an iron will. We were no longer one, but now two very seperate people. In many ways, Maq took on a life of her own.
It was about at this time that I decided to give webpage building a try. Right at first, it was a geocities account, with a black background and bright blue font. The name for this page, "Maq's Hunter Hide-Out", came about from my inability to seperate myself from my now seperate persona. For some odd reason, I decided that I needed a new persona to lead this page; someone younger and more human like. But I kept that name 'Maq' for this character. She greeted people at the door, then promptly tossed them out. However, she didn't last, and was promptly tossed out as well. I brought in Maq from the FR, the RPG she was in. This persona had a fairly grounded history, and she was already established. The page flurished.
But alas, tragedy struck. The RPG that had given this character life was dying. While many people attempted to breathe life back into it, it finally went down. This left Maq with only one place to go. She became exclusive to my webpage, running it with an iron fist. I tried to get some friends to help her out, but in the end, it was just me and her. She continued to grow and evolve, although her history changed liked the weather. She did her Mary Su bit, being Zero's little sister and X's crush. Fortunatly, she's been weaned from that storyline and is currently recovering from it's effects. She was a strong character, and the page celebrated 3 years of growth.
